How To Get Rid Of Cold Symptoms

Whenever I have symptoms of a cold, especially with drainage that catches in my throat, I take Guaifenesin, available at any CVS as “Chest Congestion Relief.” Guaifenesin is harmless - you can take it every day - and in fact I take it every night because it keeps me from waking myself up coughing.
At night I take the “DM” (dextromethorphan) version, which is also a cough suppressant but tends to make me drowsy. Read on…
In the day I occasionally take the “PE” (phenylephrine hcl) version, which is a decongestant, especially when I have sinus congestion. Pseudophedrine is a better decongestant but can cause high blood pressure, is used in making methamphetamines, and can only be gotten in small quantities from a pharmacist (no prescription needed).
A dentist-friend-client introduced us to Guaifenesin years ago when you could only get it by subscription, and it has saved me many times. I have researched it and there are no known harmful side effects. It only thins your mucous and keeps you from coughing or having to clear your throat. Great for anyone over 50.
I also take Echinacea Golden Seal (available at GNC and probably CVS too) at the first signs of a cold (but only then) and have been able to completely knock back colds on many occasions. The trick is to take it early, just for a few days, then stop.
